IR Webcam Conversion
Written by Administrator
Saturday, 30 June 2007
Some people say I have too much time on my hands. I say, I take advantage of the little piece of time I was given. Below is a video I made this weekend, just in time for the Fourth of July. I used a converted web cam that I got for $6 from Fry's (I believe thier was also a $6 rebate as well, so the camera cost was zip. I removed the outer shell as I did not need that anymore. I carefully dug out the very tiny lens that was pressure inserted into the plastic holder. Mounted ahead of the lens, which required the lens removal, was a microthin, tiny sheet of glass that bocked the IR light from the CMOS sensor. I mounted the hacked camera circuit and sensor in a small black Project box I purchased at Radio Shack. In from of the web cam lens I mounted via the project box itself, a 37mm ND (Neutral Density) filter set. Yes a whole set! ND2 + ND4 + ND8!! Pardon the weirdness, I could not resist. :-)

Hubble Telescope photos enhanced to soften America's pocketbook.

What NASA doesn't like to tell you, is that they colorize these photos to improve the "Wow!" factor. It somehow seems to loosen the money taxpayers belt when they come asking for funding. Also due to the curvature of the universe, they say with a strong enough telescope you should be able to see you own ass.. ( A little known fact.) Don't get me wrong I love this stuff, but there doesn't seem to be a clear public agenda for space exploration. We went to the moon and then we realized there was was no real reason to do that. Now that global warming is becoming impossible to refute, suddenly the government wants to explore Mars. For what? It's dirt, and rocks, much like Afghanistan. Hmmm. I mean considering the overall cost of such a venture, certainly we must have realized that our more serious terrestrial is are not solvable and that a select few are planning to colonize Mars, because Earth is not survivable. If in fact it is not this seemingly far fetched scenario, are we once again going to find ourselves standing on another planet, waving the American flag and asking ourselves, "What now?" NASA will probably start coloring Mars green to make it more inviting, while an elite group of con artists systematically begin selling 'Prime Real Estate' on Mars to the unsuspecting masses who arrive to enjoy their newly acquired desert canal.

I have been working in my new position at work now for several months. The change in responsabilities is great as is the change in skillset. At my age it is taking a toll. I come home exhausted, with little energy left for anything including the toybox. Things are getting better, but it will take time to really feel cometent and well, useful again.
